Further we will detail the aspects of our pricing scheme.

Whenever you think about improving the security of your house, the cost will probably comes to the back of your mind. Your home is probably the biggest investment in your lifetime, so it’s natural to want to protect it. It’s up to you what type and how many locks you install in your house, and their is plenty of options to choose from, so it will definitely can be confusing trying to work out what’s best for you and your home.

So naturally this means you will go search online for details, like how much a new lock should cost or if a cheap lock means substandard security and if an expensive one really translates to better quality and security. In the following, we, Low CostLocksmiths, will explain you some basic principles for our pricing scheme.

Door Lock Standards

The standards engraved on a lock is a measure of the quality and security of the lock. They are used to test the strength and reliability of the door lock. To be given a certain standard, a lock must be able to pass various tests that prove their strength and longevity. The British Standard sets a benchmark for quality goods and services.

TS007

This standard is aimed at protecting cylinder locks against all known methods of forced entry. Any cylinders or hardware solutions that meet the requirements are marked in correlation with the star rating scheme.

BS 3621 and BS 8621

This series is set to provide a national performance standard for single point locks that ensure a minimum set of specification to provide adequate protection for external doors.

This is regulated by the BSI (British Standards). The BSI has a Royal Charter that grants them the authority to prepare, revise, alter and amend the standards as experience and circumstances require. A lock with British Standard kite mark is guaranteed to meet the minimum performance for locks and cylinders on internal or external doors set by the police service. A door lock with a British Standard kite mark will cost more than an untested lock, but you will be paying for the peace of mind that this lock will secure your home.

There is a trend of higher standard locks having a higher price tag. This is because the higher the standard the longer the lock will last and keep you more secure than lower standard locks. In this instance, choosing to spend less on your home security may be detrimental in the long run, as the cost of a break-in will be significantly higher than the cost of a high standard lock.

Installation of your Lock

Unfortunately, just buying a replacement door lock isn’t enough. You will need to install it as well. You might be tempted to install the lock yourself to save money. However, unless you are a professional Locksmith we would advise against it.

Modern uPVC doors are very complicated and contain a lot of moving parts, so you may struggle to install the lock correctly leaving you with a weaker security more susceptible to an attack. Also, even if you have the DIY skills to fit the locks yourself, by doing so you may be breaching the terms of your home insurance. This means that if you had a break in, and you fitted the locks yourself, your insurance company can deny you payment.

The cost of a Locksmith depends on few crucial factors; how many locks you need changing, what type of door you have and what equipment is needed. Our Locksmiths technicians will be able to install one new lock within an hour, however if you have just moved and need multiple locks replacing it could be longer and therefore cost more. The price will also be affected if you call for an emergency as rapid response and unsociable hours. You can’t help your lock breaking but if it is a planned job then you may try to keep it in work hours on a weekday to keep the price down.

Brand of Lock

As with almost every product on the market, you will find it is available in several brands. You may have heard of some of the big lock brands; Yale, Abloy, Mul-T-Lock etc. Big brands do come with certain benefits; guarantees, customer service and a long history of manufacturing locks, amongst other things, but they do come with a steeper price tag.

There are some lock brands that are endorsed by Locksmiths and experts that offer a high amount of security whereas there are big lock brands that homeowners are warned against as the security of the product does not correspond with its price tag. Branding can be a very confusing as popularity and brand can often be confused with quality when this is defenetly not the case.

Companies like Yale have been around for 100’s of years and most Locksmiths train by using the most common brands. If you buy a lock that is unbranded or an obscure brand, there is a risk that a Locksmith may not be able to fit it properly.

Locksmith Prices & Cost Estimates

The prices will vary across companies, job type and parts needed, meaning that it can be difficult to assess all the different factors that may affect pricing. Whether it is just a simple lock change, lock out or security upgrade we have created our ultimate guide to help you to understand the different variables of Locksmith prices.

Do keep in mind that this guide is only meant to give you a reference and provide estimates and does not reflect a price that you are guaranteed to pay; it is impossible to offer a guaranteed price until there is a Locksmith at your door. However, with that being said, any Locksmith that you do call out should make it clear how they carry out their prices and should be able to give you an estimated cost before coming out to you.

How much does it cost to hire a Locksmith?

The type of job, parts required, and time of day are all factors that will affect the final prices. For example, if you would like to simply change your locks after moving into a new home at 2pm you can expect to pay less than an emergency lock out at 11pm.

How much does a Locksmith charge?

In the normal working hours between 8am and 5pm, Monday to Friday, therefore you can expect to pay an estimated £45 for a simple straight forward job. However, the time of day will have an impact on the job rate with premiums being charged at weekends and in the evenings outside of the normal working hours.

Locksmith Prices: what can affect them?

Date and Time

The hour of the day will have an impact on the hourly labour rate that a Locksmith will charge, a premium is often charged for inconvenient times such as late at night. Therefore, don’t expect to be charged the same at 3 in the morning as you would in the middle of the day.

Lock Type and Brand

Different lock sizes, brands and models all come with their own prices, this can be dependent on the rarity of the lock, the security that the lock holds and the type of door or window that it secures. Our Locksmith will always arrive at the site with a fully stocked van to offer you options on which lock type you would like as a replacement, should you choose a higher security model you can expect to pay more than a lower security model.

Our code of conduct states that we will always replace with at least like for like or higher, meaning that when we replace a part it’s always with the same security level as the part that is being replaced if not higher in order not to compromise the security level of your property. Therefore, you should consider that if you currently have a high security part, the cost of the part we install will be more expensive as we will match that security.

Do keep in mind that even though a Locksmith might arrive with a fully stocked van, should you have a unique or exotic part that is not commonly carried on board, that part might need to be ordered in and therefore the job might require multiple visits.

Size and type of Job

Our technicians do charge per job, and in situations where only a single lock needs to be changed, you can be fairly confident you will be charged the quoted amount. However, a larger job with multiple locks on different doors and windows will require more time to complete therefore you may need to expect a bigger bill. Similarly, if a part is required that is not carried on board and needs to be ordered in, multiple visits will be required meaning you may be charged in batches, the quoted amount.

Should you be locked out or a key has snapped and there is no need for parts, you will only have to consider the labour rate for the Locksmith’s time.

Parts/Equipment

Services that require the use of parts to be replaced will be more expensive than services that do not. Locks that have been snapped or damaged beyond repair will require the installation of new parts, and therefore be more expensive than a simple lock out.

uPVC Door Locks

The most common lock on a uPVC door is a Euro cylinder and is often partnered with a multi-point locking system. The most cost-effective repair service on a uPVC door is a cylinder change which can be done without changing the entire mechanism. On average a Euro cylinder can cost an estimated £45, varying depending on size, make and model.

Wooden Door Locks

Night Latch

Often described as a ‘Yale Lock’, the night-latch sits on the top portion of a wooden door and is often accompanied by a mortice lock that sits in the middle of the door. If a night-latch needs to be changed for security purposes, it will only be the internal cylinder that needs to be replaced which is more cost effective, whereas replacing the entire night-latch is a more costly process but may be necessary.

Mortice Locks

Mortice locks can start around £45, but can increase in price depending on size, make or model. British Standard versions are more expensive, but they are a requirement on insurance policies for all external wooden doors.

How to reduce Locksmith costs

If it isn’t an emergency service that you require, we suggest booking a time with a Locksmith within working hours to ensure that the labour rate will be the most cost effective for your situation. Unfortunately, there aren’t any hints and tricks to reducing Locksmith costs, at the end of the day having the right security on your locks is more important than saving a few pennies, so we always recommend that you take the time to consider the right make and models for you to ensure that your home is protected.

You may be tempted to do the work yourself, but we strongly advise against this if you are not a trained Locksmith. If you carry out work on your property it can invalidate your insurance policy as most have terms and conditions where you are required to get certain work done by a professional rather than DIY. With such a varied array of locks on the market, identifying the correct lock without proper training is not advised as if it’s the wrong lock it can compromise the security of your property.

How much does an emergency Locksmith cost?

You can expect to pay an estimated £89 for labour charge + any parts if they are required + VAT.

Overall, an emergency Locksmith should be similar in price to a regular Locksmith but just with a quicker response time.

Emergency Locksmith prices and costs

If you ever find yourself in need of an emergency Locksmith, it can be difficult to know whether the cost is justified, however it is important to remember that the cost of an emergency Locksmith is always dependent on a few different factors such as: time, type of emergency, type of lock etc.

An emergency job can consist of something as simple as a lock out or a more serious occasion such as securing a property after a burglary, either way you want someone to be attending to you as soon as possible. Like any other Locksmith service, if you simply need to gain entry then you will only be charged a labour rate + VAT whereas if you need to completely replace a component you will be charged the labour rate + the parts supplied + VAT. The latter would be the more expensive service.

Apart from any potential traffic in your area, the time of the job shouldn’t be that much of a factor in how quickly a Locksmith will come out to you, but if you call on someone in unsociable hours you will most likely be charged a premium. Calling out a Locksmith in the middle of the day will definitely cost less than calling them out in the middle of the night. Likewise, calling out a Locksmith on a Bank Holiday Monday is going to be more expensive then calling them out a day later on the Tuesday.

Call Out Charge

We generally do not charge such a fee if you agree to proceed with the job, but if we arrive at the address and you don’t longer need us or you do not agree with the technician`s quote, we will be obliged to charge you a fee.

Why might an emergency Locksmith cost more?

Unfortunately, emergency locksmiths are mostly needed outside of sociable hours, where you do not have the time to wait for it to be fixed or you need to quickly gain access to your property. This means that a premium is usually charged for an out of hours call out and quick response.

Emergency Boarding up

If you are in the unfortunate situation where you have been burgled and doors and windows have been broken and damaged beyond repair, you may need an emergency boarding up service. The labour cost to board up any doors or windows will be the same as any other service, but what you will need to consider is the cost of the plywood needed to board up the affected areas and the cost to repair the doors or windows in question.

You will also need to budget for a few hours of labour, as a Locksmith would need to attend the site first for measurements and then would need time to properly install and secure the plywood. You could be looking at upwards of £200 for a boarding up service depending on the amount of material needed, time of day etc.
